“A City of Sadness” Tea House was made famous serving as the film set for director Hsiao-Hsien Hou’s film of the same title. It has since attracted many filmmakers, tourists to the area. The tea house was built mimicking the 1950s as a traditional inn, a distinctive Taiwanese tea house of the era. The tea house was founded almost 30 years ago and has never gone under any major changes to deviate from its Taiwanese vibe. The tea house promotes teas around Taiwan, especially of the Oolong variety; and other tea inspired desserts, sugar cakes, tea infused plums and many more. It also serves traditional Taiwanese dishes, coffee, Western style scented and herbal teas, even the lesser known Taiwan big-bowl tea which have all become crowd favorites.
| Grandma Lai's Sweet Taro Balls
There’s nothing better represents Jiufen quite like the “Grandma Lai's Sweet Taro Balls”. Grandma Lai's Sweet Taro Balls dedicates itself in serving the freshest taro balls, all handmade without any preservatives. The shop uses the best of Dajia taros, skinned, steamed, then tapioca starch is added in the mix, water is slowly added so the texture and the aroma are captured at its best. The dough is then shaped into strips, cut into cubes then boiled to a chewy perfection. They are then made into shaved ice during the summer, or a hot steaming bowl of sweetened taro stew, along with accompaniments such as adzuki beans, soy beans and mung beans to freshen up your taste buds and leave you wanting for more.
